Pigmentation & Melasma

Melasma is identified by brown patches of discoloration, most commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin.

Melasma is caused by melanocytes in the skin producing too much pigmentation. It is identified by large brown patches of discolouration that appear on the face, most commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. The discolouration is usually symmetrical on the face and can last for many years or in some cases, for life.

What causes melasma?

Melasma can be caused by several factors but is commonly caused by excess sun exposure and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, taking the contraceptive pill, natural oestrogen fluctuation and hormone replacement therapy. In some cases, genetics can play a part in the development of melasma. Given the instability of hormones, those affected by melasma generally notice variances in the severity of their condition. While melasma can occur in both men and women, there is a significantly higher prevalence in the latter. People with darker skin tones are more likely to develop melasma as darker skin naturally has more melanocytes.

How can melasma be treated?

As a chronic skin condition, melasma cannot be cured. However, its appearance can be reduced using a combination of targeted treatment and a healthy skincare routine. As with many skin conditions, there is no “one and done” solution. Melasma tends to return so upkeep is essential to maintain results.

Standard Photo rejuvenation or IPL treatments are not suitable for treating melasma due to the heat which can trigger the production of more pigmentation. Instead, treatments such as Laser Correction Facials, Cosmelan and chemical peels are used in conjunction with products such as Mesoprotech Melan, Aspect Dr Complete Pigment Plus, SkinBetter Science Intensive AlphaRet and more to achieve the best results.

Take back control of your skin!

As with all skin conditions, melasma not only has an impact on you physically but can also damage your mental health. It can strip you of your confidence and self-esteem and leave you feeling helpless.

It is important not to let melasma take control of your life. While it’s a condition you may need to learn to live with, a targeted treatment and a skincare plan can greatly reduce the effects of melasma and help you take back your confidence.
